A quick initial concept scheme has been developed to gain some ideas regarding space, size and form for the proposed bath site.
The preliminary design is based upon a linear form that abstracts the key elements within the Turkish bathing process. Firstly, a large monolithic volume emerges from the ground that represents the "camekan", a large top-lit entrance space found within most traditional Turkish baths. A process of descent is created by a long ramped walkway that delivers bathers to the first area of the baths, and also allows the bathers to exit at any point and explore just one section of the baths in any order. The first pre scripted area is the "Segulkuk", a dimly lit space that's primary purpose is to meet and socially interact whilst being gently heated by hot dry air. Here, the lighting will be achieved via a grid perforated roof plane that forms part of the landscape above ground, pedestrian flow will create a flickering light, reminiscent of the candles found in traditional Segulkuk. The next room will be the Hararet, which features a more stabilised lighting system, larger perforations in the roof plan coupled with an undulated form will reduce pedestrian movement above and stabilise the lighting. The third element is the Ablution baths, flowing water is coupled by a strong presence of un-interrupted ethereal light from above . The basic concept behind this scheme is the interplay of light which forms an essential part of the traditional bathing experience.
